Prior to April 2006, there was no obstructive sleep apnoea service across Lincolnshire, leaving a population of roughly 700,000 people with little provision for sleeping disorders. Due to increased access to resources more people are able to address their sleeping problems and enhance the quality of their lives. In 2008 the Sleeping Disorders Centre won the NHS East Midlands Healthcare Award for service transformation.

Mr Michael Oko – ENT Consultant FRCS(Ed) FRCS(ORL-HNS)

Mr Oko is a consultant ENT surgeon with a special interest and expertise in sleep apnoea and other sleeping disorders. He qualified in 1986 and trained at St Mary’s & Royal National Throat, Nose & Ear Hospital in London. He was a lecturer at the University of Glasgow in ENT surgery and was one of the 12 finalists in 1995 for the Surgeon in Training medal -organised by The Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh- for instrument design and innovation. In 2005 he was appointed as a consultant surgeon for ENT for the United Lincolnshire Hospitals Trust (ULHT) & Clinical Lead for Sleep Apnoea Service, and served as Clinical Lead for General Surgery 2009-20011and Clinical Lead for ENT for ULHT from 2007 to 2011.

Mr Oko founded the Sleeping Disorders Centre based at Pilgrim Hospital in Boston in 2006, and has since opened satellite clinics at Johnson Hospital, Spalding, and London. In 2008 Mr Oko’s pioneering sleep service at ULHT won the NHS East Midlands Healthcare Award for service transformation. In 2011 he won the Middle East Hospitals award for Respiratory excellence for raising awareness of Sleep Apnoea in the region.

Mr Oko actively campaigns for better research and facilities for sufferers of sleeping disorders, including the risks associated with undiagnosed sleep apnoea. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, and is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, The European Respiratory Society, the British Association of Otolaryngology the British Medical Association and the Royal Society of Medicine.

Professor Ram Dhillon – ENT Consultant MBBS (Lon) FRCS (RCS Eng)

MBBS (London University), FRCS (Royal College of Surgeons of England), Associate Professor, Plymouth University School of Medicine & Dentistry and Emeritus Consultant ENT Surgeon, Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow, London.

Ram Dhillon qualified from University College London Hospital Medical School, London in 1978. He was an ENT trainee in London and was appointed Consultant ENT to Northwick Park Hospital in 1989. He is registered with the General Medical Council in Otolaryngology (GMC No: 244 1292)

He has trained in all aspects of ENT Head & Neck Surgery but now focuses his interests on snoring, voice disorders, rhinology and otology. His NHS Voice Clinic, was the recipient of the Steinberg Prize, and provided a secondary and tertiary referral service.

Professor Dhillon also has a major interest in Snoring and Sleep disorders having initiated such a service for patients at Northwick Park in 1990. He offers, with Mr Michael Oko, his ENT consultant colleague, the full range of expertise from consultation, investigations, including non-surgical and surgical treatments. His other interests are general ENT but particularly nasal allergy, endoscopic sinus surgery and middle ear disease.

He was one of six National Clinical Leads in the UK Department of Health Modernisation Agency looking at new ways of delivering NHS healthcare. He has been a member of several regional committees e.g. North West Thames Strategic Health Authority, GPs with Special Interests. Lectured and presented for numerous organisations e.g. Dept of Health collaborative in CHD & Emergency Care, for the National Association for Primary Care and Primary Care Trusts and Practice Based Commissioning groups

Ram Dhillon was awarded an Honorary Professorship at Middlesex University, London, in 2001, as recognition of his work in medical education, particularly in the development of GPs with Special Interests. More latterly his work was recognised with the award of an Associate Professorship at Plymouth University. Under his guidance the Universities and its collaborative partner, Rila Institute of Health Sciences have, over a period of 23 years, trained over 81200 doctors to successfully gain a postgraduate medical qualification. He was also Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College Science, Technology and Medicine, London, since 2000-2020.

Professor Dhillon was founder and co-editor for 12 years, of the first Continuing Professional Development journal in ENT, the CME Bulletin in ENT & Head & Neck Surgery. He remains on the editorial board of its present manifestation as “The Otorhinolaryngologist”. Ram Dhillon is a member of the “British Association of Otolaryngology” and the “British Medical Council”.
